Nearly 30 years ago I started a journey. To help people discover their potential, build deeper and more meaningful relationships with their teammates and realize the incredible power of a team that supports one another, communicates well and leverages the abilities of each person.
The journey began in 1989, at a time when the phrase “team building” was not really even a part of the business vernacular and “experiential learning” was often misconstrued as “EXPERIMENTAL LEARNING”…what? Through a heavy does of education and persistence, the business community was warming to the idea of team building and even embracing it.
Of course, with any new trend, everyone jumps on the band wagon in an effort to ride the new wave to quick riches. By the mid 2000’s, new companies and ideas were popping up just about everywhere/. Activities like paintball, corporate scavenger hunts, crazy olympics, Survivor themed events, etc. and what they all had in common was the phrase “team building”.
The original idea behind team building was centered around personal and team development as an investment in human capital. The new activities seemed to have nothing to do with building a great productive and sustainable team, they promoted cheating to win at all cost, diminishing the value of people, and embarrassment for some.
Today, almost everyone has participated in some team building experience. Some good and some bad. The industry has been watered down to the point that the new definition for team building is…Anything that gets a group together. Unfortunately, many of these new team building activities have nothing to do with building a better team and some do just the opposite.
So, my journey continues. I have chosen to remain true to the original purpose behind team building and provide purposeful programs that create meaningful interactions between people with the goal of developing teams that work.
