The "big picture" answer is that Rapid Egg Delivery is a fun and lightly competitive exercise designed to stretch people beyond their comfort zones and create stronger teams. This high-energy program helps participants build better relationships and gain new respect for their abilities as well as their teammates'.
Rapid Egg Delivery is so effective because it offers direct correlations to circumstances in the workplace. Just as important, it's FUN, which always intensifies learning. The program is essentially a large-scale project, with both creative and technical components. Throughout the exercise, participants play a variety of roles. There are also unexpected changes throughout that require adaptability.
Rapid Egg Delivery is highly representative of actual workplace dynamics, without the real-life risk involved in working in new roles and trying out new behaviors. That means it's the perfect opportunity for meaningful lessons that enrich teamwork and productivity back at the office.
Sure. In Rapid Egg Delivery, participants are divided into teams of 10-15 people. They are asked to imagine that there has been a significant worldwide increase in demand for home delivery of eggs. Incredible opportunities await those who can develop a simple, yet effective, means for launching eggs onto the doorsteps of customers. One huge caveat: no matter how teams choose to construct their Egg Carriers and Rapid Egg Delivery devices, the eggs must arrive on target and undamaged.
There are six roles that people can play during the activity. The roles are distributed randomly at the beginning of the program. While the group is involved in the project, the team's Project Manager is given a series of memos that affect each team in different ways. All teams must be able to adapt to these changes and still meet the same objectives. These various changes reflect the unpredictability and challenges people face in a real world workplace and teach the value of flexibility and problem-solving in a climate of mutual support and respect.
Each team is given a kit containing supplies such as wooden beams, ½-inch and ¾-inch PVC piping and connectors, threaded rods, nuts and washers, elastic cord, large and small metal rings, wrenches, zip ties, safety goggles, 2.5 lb. and 5 lb. barbell weights, calculator, colored markers, scissors, etc. They "purchase" items for the Egg Carrier at the Supply Store once they have come up with a design that will work in conjunction with the Egg Launching Device.
An important component to Rapid Egg Delivery is that each of the roles and responsibilities participants play must interface with each other to ensure that all components come together in the end. For example, the performance expectations regarding reaching the target must be coupled with getting the project done within the allotted amount of time and at the lowest possible cost.
After the devices have been constructed, each team carries out a sales and marketing presentation. This part of the exercise is fun for all, as teams share their final product and see what others have come up with. Just as important is the fact that non-technical thinkers are allowed to really shine in this phase of the program, while the earlier construction phase emphasizes the contributions of more technical thinkers.
At the end of the sales and marketing presentation, each team demonstrates its egg-launching device. The final products are graded on the accuracy and effectiveness of the device, economy of supplies used, safety and marketing.
Rapid Egg Delivery provides a powerful metaphor for exploring the concept of collaboration versus competition within teams. It clearly illustrates the value of having the right people in the right roles to leverage every person's talents and strengths.
The program is also about performing well under pressure and adapting to change, both of which are critical real-world skills. AND IT'S FUN! It builds stronger relationships rapidly by giving participants a shared experience in an atmosphere that parallels the corporate environment.
Rapid Egg Delivery works best indoors. It can take place in almost any large area including resorts or conference centers. Please make sure that the facility provides at least 50 square feet per participant as well as tables and chairs. (When you're planning the number of tables, remember that teams consist of 10-15 people each.)
Rapid Egg Delivery is for large groups of 50 to 200 people.
We offer this program as a two-hour to four-hour program. It also allows for a debriefing afterwards in which highly trained Signature Teambuilding facilitators guide group discussion that leads to major insights and Aha! moments.
